An 18-year-old man was remanded in custody after he pleaded not guilty to stealing food and jewellery from his mother.

Magistrate Silvio Meli heard Abdul Kerim Tarhuni from Senglea at first plead guilty to the charges but after he was told by the court to reconsider his plea Mr Tarhuni changed his plea and pleaded not guilty.

He was charged with stealing a satellite receiver, DVD player, surround speakers, food and jewellery worth over €1200.

The court heard how Mr Tarhuni who is now unemployed lost his job after he had become addicted to gambling. Magistrate Meli subsequently remanded him in custody.
