In the 12 years between 2000 and 2011 there were a total of 87,620 traffic accidents reported. One hundred and seventy-eight of them were fatal, with a total of 195 victims.

Details given by Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi in reply to a parliamentary question by Anthony Agius Decelis (PL) show that the number of accidents reported were at a high of 14,294 in 2002, dropping to a low of 2,629 in 2010.

But, Dr Gonzi pointed out, traffic accidents that were neither fatal nor caused injuries or damage to public property stopped being investigated by the police in March 2004.
