The number of traffic-related contraventions dropped by 28,858 between 2009 and last year.

Tickets issued last year amounted to 173,360, Tourism Minister Karmenu Vella told Deo Debattista (PL) in reply to a parliamentary question.

That compares to 181,956 in 2011, 191,099 in 2010 and 202,218 in 2009.

Wardens on the roads last year issued 135,315 contraventions, while CCTV and speed cameras were responsible for 38,045 others.

16,771 were issued in St Julian's and just eight were issued in San Lawrenz, Gozo
