Seventeen people were injured after a cruise ship carrying French passengers crashed into a wall in a lock in New York State.

The US Coast Guard said the Saint Laurent was heading from Montreal to Toronto along the St Lawrence Seaway when it struck a wall in Eisenhower Lock in Massena, near the Canadian border.

There were 274 French passengers and crew aboard.

St Lawrence County emergency officials say none of the injuries are serious. Officials said all 17 people had been treated and released.

Officials say the water has been drained from the lock, and the ship will remain there until it can be moved. An investigation into the crash is under way.

The St Lawrence Seaway is a system of locks, canals and channels which allow ocean-going ships to reach the Great Lakes via the Atlantic.

The Saint Laurent is owned by International Shipping Partners.
