More than 17,000 tons of recycled waste were collected last year at the Sant’Antnin Waste Treatment Plant, more than half of which was brought in through the door-to-door collection scheme.

Recyclable waste collected by households in the grey bags increased to 9,719 tonnes in 2011 from 9,233 tonnes in 2010.

The five localities where most recyclable waste was through the domestic door-to-door collection scheme were Birkirkara, Mosta, Qormi, Sliema and Naxxar.

Last year, the plant also treated more than 7,000 tonnes of dry recyclables separated at source by hotels, schools, government departments and at bring-in sites.

Between January and December, WasteServ sold nearly 15,000 tonnes of material and more than 600 containers were exported by the private sector for recycling overseas.

The public is urged to call WasteServ on 8007 2200 for more informaton or visit the WasteServ Information Centre at City Gate Arcade, Valletta.
