Thomas Smith Group announces its 15th edition of the Christmas Charity swim, with the objective to raise as many funds as possible in aid of the Malta Community Chest Fund. The event is traditionally held on the Sunday that falls between Christmas and New Year. The 2013 charity swim will therefore be held on Sunday 29th December, at the long-established location off the pier in front of the Plough and Anchor Pub, Sliema.
Registration starts at 09.30hrs. President George Abela is expected to launch the Christmas Charity swim at 10:30hrs.
Last year a record-breaking number of swimmers participated in this noble event. A total of 247 people braved the cold jellyfish infested waters and jumped into the waters, as a fundraising activity for L-Istrina. A cheque of €10,000 was later presented to the President George Abela at the San Anton Palace. Thomas Smith aims to collect even more funds this year, and would like to encourage swimmers to raise €50 per participant. Each participant may fill in a form prior to the event with relevant details and amounts donated by the swimmer’s sponsors.

Participants included the loyal supporter of the event Martin Bugelli, Head of the European Commission, Nationalist MPs Beppe Fenech Adami, Pierre Portelli and the ‘Angli’ television show crew, and Sliema Local Council members. All participants, aged between 11 and 76, were presented with medals, as a token for taking part in such an honorable gesture.
The Charity Swim was first held in 1999 as a brainchild of Anton Buttigieg, General Manager of Thomas Smith Port Agency, and some of his friends, who showed their appreciation by collecting a small sum of money in aid of charity in return for Mr Buttigieg’s winter swim during the Christmas season 14 years ago.
