Fifteen companies have responded to a call by the Ministry of Resources to install photovoltaic units on the roofs of government buildings.

The companies are proposing to install PVs covering a total of 75,000 square metres in an investment of €25 million. They would then supply power to the national grid and be paid for it.

The scheme, first announced in the Budget, is expected to produce enough energy to meet the needs of 1,500 families.

The scheme is part of government efforts to ensure that by 2020, 10% of Malta's energy needs are produced through clean sources.
