A total of 128 new nurses and midwives have joined the health sector after recently completing their studies.

They will be working at Mater Dei hospital, the oncology centre, Karen Grech hospital and at St Vincent de Paul and other homes for the elderly.

The Malta Union of Midwives and Nurses welcomed the decision by the Health Department to employ new nurses and said their induction course was well under way.

The union also noted that the management of Mater Dei would be implementing a number of its proposals.

These include the introduction of overtime for nurses in the emergency department, new services for nurses working the night shift, as well as a system to help ease traffic congestion in the hospital’s parking areas every morning.
