A European Fund for Malta's Internal Security was launched today, with €75 million coming from EU sources and €25m from national funds.

Deputy Prime Minister Louis Grech said the funds, covering the period till 2020, will be used for the acquisition of a new AFM  patrol boat, a new helicopter, better police monitoring equipment, bomb detection and disposal equipment, improved visa procedures and measures against human trafficking.

He said the purpose of the fund is to equip the police to fight crime, to better protect the EU border and better control of visas.

Mr Grech said the launching of the fund came at a delicate moment where it was being shown how EU member states needed to strengthen their security.
