Just under 1,000 people have, in five days, registered in the new online system which enables notification and settlement of fines imposed by wardens.

Justice and local government minister Owen Bonnici said feedback had been very positive, especially from businesses since they could better keep track of notifications.

He explained that people could voluntarily register on les.gov.mt and they would receive summons for tribunal hearings online.

They could opt to settle the fines online or contest the charge by petition, also online.

Dr Bonnici said it was hoped that the system would be extended to the law courts.
