The 10th edition of Bethlehem f’Għajnsielem, the Nativity village that attracts thousands of visitors to Gozo, is in its second week.
The village, which is spread over 20,000 square metres of land, seeks to replicate the atmosphere and environs of Bethlehem at the time when Jesus Christ was born over 2,000 years ago.
On entrance, a map is given to all visitors to enhance the overall experience. Attractions include a fisherman’s port, a 30-metre suspended rope bridge which visitors can cross to take a trip along a ‘stream’ on a Maltese boat, as well as a bakery, blacksmith, carpenter, a wine tavern, an open-air market and an inn.
Each dwelling is inhabited and animated by families, to remind everyone that Christmas is a celebration of the family. The tavern offers local food and wine.
The main attraction, however, is the crib, with baby Jesus in the caring hands of Mary assisted by Joseph... a donkey and a cow are close by. There is also a picnic area.
Although the Nativity village is always open, it will only be animated on the following days: tomorrow from 4.30 to 8.30pm; Sunday from 2.30 to 7.30pm, Tuesday (Christmas Day) from 3.30 to 8pm and Wednesday (Boxing Day) from 2.30 to 7.30pm; Friday, December 28 from 4.30 to 7.30pm; Saturday, December 29 from 4.30 to 8.30pm; Sunday, December 30 from 2.30 to 7.30pm; Tuesday, January 1 from 3.30 to 8pm, Saturday, January 5 Activity Magi in Malta to be announced later and Sunday, January 6 (closing ceremony) from 2pm to 8pm.
The event is organised by the Għajnsielem local council, the Gozo Ministry, Our Lady of Loreto parish church and Għajnsielem NGOs.
