A Grievances Board set up within the police force shortly after the last general election has upheld complaints filed by 30 policemen who claimed to have suffered injustices under the former government in the last legislature.

Eighty one cases had been filed.

Home Affairs Minister Carmelo Abela today handed letters of appointment to 10 of the officers whose case was upheld. They have received immediate promotion, backdated to when the injustices took place.

The cases involved sergeants who have now been promoted to sergeant-major and constables who have been promoted to sergeant. Other serving officers whose cases were also upheld will be getting financial compensation. Retired officers will have their pension adjusted.

The remaining cases were dismissed for various reasons, including that they went back more than seven years, cases were still pending before the courts of the Police Board and instances where the injustice could not be found.

Mr Abela also formally handed the letter of appointment to Laurence Cutajar as Acting Police Commissioner.
