St George's 0
Vittoriosa Stars 4

Vittoriosa Stars are back in the promotion hunt after thrashing St George's for a third victory over their neighbouring rivals this season.

This was not the Saints' day as they went down heavily to Vittoriosa who played with a man less for more than 45 minutes following a red card to Johan Spiteri.

The Stars are now level on 22 points with Mosta, two adrift of joint-leaders Dingli and Pieta.

St George's were the first team to pose a threat when on 16 minutes a Silvio Sciberras drive from outside the area was saved by Alex Camilleri. For Vittoriosa, Anthony Eviparker could have done better when he shot wide following some good work by Ndubisi Chukunyere.

A Clint Schiavone shot from inside the box saw a posse of St George's players failing to conclude from routine distance. At the other end, Vittoriosa missed a great opportunity when Kenneth Abela headed over from a Chukunyere free-kick.

But on 32 minutes Vittoriosa took the lead, Eviparker hitting first-time despite keeper Thomas Galea getting a touch to the ball.

Gorg Faure's side held control but three minutes from half-time they were dealt a blow when Spiteri was dismissed for a second yellow card.

However, Vittoriosa continued to run the show and on 49 minutes it was 2-0 thanks to Abela who pushed the ball over the line from a free-kick.

The Saints were jaded and on 75 minutes Eviparker picked up a ball following a precise Keith Darmanin pass, and despite being marked by two defenders chipped it home for his side's third goal.

Late on, Vittoriosa put the icing on the cake when substitute Howard Hughes stroke the ball home from close range amid the celebrations of the numerous Vittoriosa fans.

Mqabba 2
Senglea Athletic 0

Mqabba did the double over bottom-placed Senglea to continue their fine run as they stretched their unbeaten sequence to seven games and distancing themselves away from the drop zone in the process.

Both teams had their moments in a balanced game and after Mqabba's early flourish, Senglea reacted immediately but fell to pieces when they had midfield dynamo Essieng Mbong sent off.

Mqabba took an early lead. In fact, after only five minutes Paul Chimezie rose high to meet a Sean Magro cross and head home past a static Senglea defence. The Nigerian goal-scorer, however, had to be substituted five minutes later following an injury.

Senglea had a Mbong header flashing just wide following a Brady Zerafa cross and then Ibrahim Tarek tested the Mqabba keeper with a rasping volley.

Mqabba were hitting back on the counter now and on 36 minutes Magro powered his way through only to shoot over from the edge of the area.

A Tarek drive soon after the restart was neutralised by goalkeeper Kris Calleja and right on the hour Senglea were unlucky when Tarek's free-kick hit the bar. From the rebound, Andrew Sciortino blased wide.

At the other end, a John Paul Muscat effort was stopped by Daniel Cosaitis as the ball looked destined to hit the back of the net.

Senglea's hopes were practically dashed 13 minutes from time when Mbong was sent off for dissent.

And on 82 minutes, Mqabba made sure of the points when substitute Michael Borg Olivier changed ball with Muscat before coolly slotting the ball home from close in.

Mqabba: K. Calleja, M. Catania, M. Bonnici, P. Grima, J. Debattista, S. Magro, P. Chimezie (M. Borg Olivier), J.P. Muscat, J. Zammit (J. Fenech), E. Borg, R. Borg.

Senglea: G. Attard, D. Cosaitis, D. Zahra, S. Zampa, A. Sciortino, E. Mbong, B. Zerafa, C. Borg, I. Tarek. J. Felice, K. Galea (G. Brincat).

Referee: Glenn Tonna.

Man of the match: Sean Magro (Mqabba).
