A total of 1,750 tons of glass have been sent to Portugal where it will be recycled and used in the beverage industry.

The glass originated from a variety of sources, including the disused dump at Wied Fulija, Bring In and Civic Amenity sites across Malta and Gozo.

Wasteserv said in a statement that this is one of the more problematic materials to export for recycling due to it being in abundant supply.

Considering the relatively small quantities of glass waste produced locally, it is not feasible to export the glass as regularly as plastic, paper and metal exports. In total, only around 2, 500 tonnes of glass waste are produced annually.
