A total of 1,400 parents were charged with failing to send their children to school in the year just ended, Education Minister Evarist Bartolo told Labour MP Luciano Busuttil.

Mr Bartolo said the greatest number of charges issued against parents since 2008-09 was in 2010-11, when 1,762 parents were involved.

The parents came mostly from Valletta, Cospicua, Qormi and Birkirkara.
