The number of workers who have taken up the dockyard retirement schemes has approached 1,000, Finance Minister Tonio Fenech said this evening.

He was speaking during a discussion on the Granaries as part of the PN Independence celebrations.

The past week saw a surge of applications after the schemes were fine-tuned in agreement with the GWU - the number more than doubling since last Friday.

Malta Shipyards had a workforce of 1,627 before the schemes were launched.
