The 2012/13 Division Two championship came to a close last weekend with the last round of matches which determined the remaining two promotion slots this season.

Żebbuġ Rangers crowned a superb season with a 2-1 win over Pembroke Athleta. At the end of the match, MFA vice president Alex Manfre presented the cham-pionship trophy to the jubilant Rangers team at the Centenary Stadium.

Msida St Joseph made sure of the runners-up spot with a 2-0 win over San Ġwann while Żurrieq and St George’s secured the third and fourth places in the final standings respectively to book their berths in Division One next season.

Żurrieq scored a goal in each half to beat Siġġiewi 2-0. The Reds fully deserved to finish high in the standings after spending most of the season in the top echelons of the league ladder.

Siġġiewi had nothing to lose but made it difficult for Żurrieq to reach their objective.

In fact, Żurrieq were rarely menacing in the opening stages even though they were in full control of proceedings.

Siġġiewi had the first real attempt on goal when Joseph Mercieca released Jason Camilleri whose effort from the edge of the area was saved by the Reds keeper.

But, on the half-hour Żurrieq took the lead with a Karl Magro goal from a Karl Sacco corner.

Żurrieq again went close before half-time when Johan Briffa burst his way through before shooting at goal but his effort smacked against the crossbar.

There was only one team in it as the second half got under way with Żurrieq launching several attacks but with scant reward.

Joseph Lia’s shot rattled the Siġġiewi woodwork and a few minutes later the same Lia was on target but this time the goalkeeper thwarted him with a fine save.

Bonello also missed a golden opportunity but on 63 minutes Żurrieq doubled their lead when Daniel Zammit found a way through before beating the keeper with a crisp shot.

Żurrieq were again denied by the woodwork when a Zammit effort hit the bar. Their last chance saw Zammit serving Christopher Far-rugia who hit badly with only the goalkeeper to beat.
