This was a match played in pouring rain but Żebbuġ adapted well to the conditions to beat San Ġwann with two second-half goals to move top of the table with 11 points along with St George’s.

Pembroke could have taken sole leadership last weekend but their match against Sta Venera was abandoned at half-time due to bad weather with the score reading 2-2.

Another match, Fgura vs Mġarr, was also called off midway through the second half. Fgura were leading 2-1.

Yesterday, it was announced that both abandoned matches will be replayed on October 24.

The upset to Rangers was San Ġwann’s first this season.

The Saints took the first initiatives early in the match and Pace’s shot skimmed the woodwork.

Amaral Ferrazdo was the Saints’ main instigator in attack.

On 15 minutes, he delivered a perfect pass towards Vella but the latter was beaten to the ball by the alert Rangers keeper.

Żebbuġ went close with a Camenzuli header that was beaten away to a corner by goalkeeper Carbonaro.

Rangers had another good chance on the half-hour mark, this time Omar Rababah was unlucky to see his shot flashing just past the upright.

There were fears that the match might be called off at half-time but the weather improved after the break.

On resumption, Żebbuġ were immediately dangerous with a Borg effort from the distance that was punched away by Carbonaro.

Then, from a D’Agostino free-kick, Rodrigues Britto’s overhead kick went slightly over.

But on 64 minutes Rangers opened the score. Alan Tabone did well to release Rababah who beat Carbonaro with a first-timed shot from inside the box.

The Saints were stunned and Żebbuġ doubled their lead 15 minutes from time when from a fast counter-break, engineered by Galea and Tabone, the latter’s grounder finished at the back of the net.

San Ġwann lost shape as Ran-gers went close to adding more goals to their tally only for Carbo-naro to come to his side’s rescue on a couple of occasions to mini-mise his team’s blushes.
