Official attendance records of MPs, published by The Times last week, showed the high absenteeism of some parliamentarians. People on the street don’t expect that, as Sarah Carabott found out.

Sean Gatt, 19, Swieqi

Going to Parliament is something MPs should do; it’s part of their job.

Domenica Dimech, 61, Valletta

It is their role to attend parliamentary sittings. They should attend all the sittings, because if we trust in them, they should be of service to us.

Joseph Piccinino, 49, Fgura

MPs should be present at the sittings. It’s a normal thing: if you work, you have to go to work, or else you won’t earn money.

Antida Frendo, 65, Victoria

I believe all MPs should attend the parliamentary sittings.

Joseph Aquilina, 46, Siġġiewi

Why shouldn’t they be present for all the sittings? It’s not fair that when citizens do not go work, it’s reduced from their leave allowance but it’s not reduced from that of MPs’, while they have been awarded a weekly €500 extra while I am just given €1.16.

Vince Psaila, 66, Valletta

Why shouldn’t they be present for all the sittings? Why do we elect them? So that they meet during the sittings and improve the country.
