The Education Minister has promised to intervene after learning that dozens of students will miss the deadline for applications to Giovanni Curmi Higher Secondary School because their re-sit results will be published too late.

“We definitely can’t close the door on our youth. The school will have to make an exception to this. I will see to it myself,” said Evarist Bartolo, who was unaware of the situation when first contacted by Times of Malta.

The summer session of O Level exams was held in the first week of September. However, students have taken to their social media accounts to lambast the delay in results and the college’s registration process.

“After all the hype to promote education I still don’t know what my results are and can’t apply to study. When I called the school they didn’t help either,” prospective A Level student Neil Lesner said on his Facebook account.

This is not fair at all. Aren’t we under enough pressure?

The final registration date for studies at the Naxxar college closes next Wednesday but secondary sitting results will not be published before the following Friday, a Matsec spokesman confirmed.

“This is not fair at all. We don’t know what to expect. Will we be able to study at the school or not? Aren’t we under enough pressure?” 16-year-old Alex Vella lamented.

The spokesperson also confirmed that the majority of the final results had been corrected but were still in the process of being compiled before publication.

“The school personnel are like a brick wall. I ask if they will help me and they don’t tell me yes but they won’t tell me no,” said Chris Sciberras on his Facebook wall.

When contacted by this newspaper under the guise of being a prospective student, a college employee said the application would not be accepted any later than the registration date.

“I’m sorry but there is nothing I can do. The closing date is what it is,” she said.

The students’ hope now lies with the Education Minister.
