Opposition Leader Joseph Muscat told Parliament yesterday that the crucial point of the documents presented to the Foreign Affairs Committee by the Prime Minister was that they show Mr Cachia Caruana knew of a decision, not only before Parliament or before the Cabinet but even before Dr Gonzi himself.

Dr Muscat said Dr Gonzi had presented what he called “a comprehensive document” during the committee hearings, but witnesses kept presenting further addenda, giving rise to the question of whether there was more information to which the opposition had no access.

The PN presented an impressive list of witnesses, both foreign and local, to prove that the PL was wrong, but then practically none of those on the list was presented to contribute to the position of Malta’s Permanent Representative of the EU.

Stories of manipulation of the media and of how Mr Cachia Caruana managed certain “storms”, cast doubts on his credibility in this regard, as did certain gaffes which showed that things were not transparent. This was very serious.

Dr Muscat said the opposition gave the debate the time necessary for facts to come to light, and now that these facts had emerged, it was further convinced of the validity of this motion.
