A repentant drug addict who mugged a 75-year-old man and made off with €150 was yesterday jailed for 18 months after also admitting to relapsing.

Glen Bonnici, 26, from Żejtun said that he was sorry for the incident and realised that what he had done was wrong.

Police Inspector Kevin Pulis told Magistrate Francesco Depasquale that Mr Bonnici had cooperated with the police.

Defence lawyer Shazoo Ghaznavi highlighted his client’s regret for what he had done and said he needed help for his drug addiction. In fact he was due to enter a drug rehabilitation programme.

In jailing him, Magistrate Depasquale took into consideration the serious nature of the charge and the fact he had been convicted of similar crimes in past. Lawyer Alicia Camilleri also appeared for Mr Bonnici.
