The former representative of Arriva employees within the General Workers’ Union wanted drivers to be paid as much as airline pilots, the union’s general secretary, Tony Zarb, said yesterday.

Testifying in libel proceedings he instituted against Samuel Grech, Mr Zarb said GWU officials had to convince him that it was not feasible that drivers and pilots get the same pay. Talks with Arriva lead to an agreement on €6 hourly pay.

Mr Zarb had taken exception to an interview Mr Grech had given to the Nationalist Party’s Sunday paper, Il-Mument, last February 17. Mr Zarb said a number of allegations made by Mr Grech were untrue.
