Malta needs a national policy on safety that includes risks associated with radiation facilities, according to international experts.

In a joint statement with the Occupational Health and Safety Authority, the International Atomic Energy Agency said the experts were also calling on Malta to establish a nuclear and radiation safety law ensuring the protection of people, property and the environment.

It was issued following a 10-day IAEA mission to review Malta’s regulatory framework for radiation safety by senior international nuclear safety and radiation protection experts.

The team drew up recommendations for the government and the Radiation Protection Board to help them strengthen Malta’s regulatory framework and functions in line with IAEA safety standards.
