Sliema local council had a “very cordial and positive” meeting with Parliamentary Secretary Josè Herrera about the proposed parking scheme.

The meeting was held on Wednesday, three weeks after the scheme was suspended by the Government in reaction to protests by residents, commuters and workers in the area.

The council said that a report, which it had submitted to the Government on holistic traffic management for Sliema, was also discussed.

The report details initiatives for the segmenting of Sliema into zones (commercial, residential and school) where traffic-related issues are catered for according to their needs. These include speed management, parking maximisation, internal public transport and the controlled timed parking scheme.

The council reiterated its position that the introduction of the controlled timed parking scheme was legal as it was being implemented according to LN 200 of 2009.
