Air Malta’s €4.5 million collective agreement with the pilots is “in line” with the company’s financial situation and targets, according to the Government.

The Times yesterday revealed details of the collective agreement that was signed away from the cameras and kept under wraps.

Pilots will see their salaries increased by a third between 2012 and 2015, compared to how they stood last year, according to the salary scales outlines in the agreement.

The company’s 130 pilots will also benefit from a one-time payment of €4,500 and a revised points-based system that could earn them another €5,000.

In return, they have agreed to give up a number of perks and follow more flexible rosters, which should translate in better productivity.

Asked for its reaction to the collective agreement, the Finance Ministry said the Government held talks with Air Malta’s management and board about the agreement.

“The Government is assured that this agreement – like all agreements with the different unions representing Air Malta’s employees – is in line with the company’s financial perspectives and with the targets of the restructuring plan that has been approved by the European Commission.”

“Besides, such agreements are linked to increases in productivity and flexibility,” he added.

In a statement, Air Malta described the agreement as a “win-win” deal which would cost the airline much less than the €4.5 million figure mentioned due to the gains made by the company.

The agreement was reached after “very difficult” discussions and was in line with Air Malta’s EU-approved restructuring plan, an airline spokesman added.

The Labour Party said it could not react to the agreement since information was scarce.

“The Government is always refraining from answering parliamentary questions on Air Malta. Thus, the PL does not have the necessary information to assess the situation.”

However, the party added that decisions were taken with the “evident blessing” of the Government, which would, therefore, “be held accountable for all this”.
