Simon Busuttil said yesterday that the Prime Minister had not spoken to him, as leader of the Opposition, over the “compromise solution” on the holding of local elections.

On Sunday, Joseph Muscat said a compromise had emerged from the public consultation being carried out on the proposal to postpone the council elections to avoid holding national polls every year.

Speaking in a Net TV interview, Dr Busuttil said there could be no compromise on the basic democratic principle of holding elections.

As he did on Saturday, he drew comparisons with the situation in Hong Kong.

There, the Chinese government wanted to choose election candidates, while in Malta the government wanted to remove the elections, Dr Busuttil said.

Dr Muscat had said the government would now present a proposal which he was sure would meet wide approval. The proposal would respect democratic mandates while being practical.
