The Customs Department yesterday denied comments by Labour MP Leo Brincat implying that fuel importers Falzon Group had been caught smuggling fuel.

In a brief statement, Customs denied that the Falzon Group had been involved in the smuggling of diesel or fuel.

Mr Brincat, the Labour spokesman for the environment, asked the government in Parliament to say how many times the Falzon Group had been caught with smuggled diesel and fuel over the past four years and what steps had been taken by the authorities.

Customs said it had carried out intense enforcement work against diesel and fuel smuggling over the past year and took the necessary action when needed.

In a counter-reply, Mr Brincat said he expected Finance Minister Tonio Fenech to “answer the parliamentary questions in the country’s highest institution and not use the Customs Department”.
