The Ministry of Tourism has no intention of further delaying decisions that should have been taken by various ministers in the 2000s, Minister Edward Zammit Lewis told Opposition MP Claudio Grech yesterday. Mr Grech had asked for a progress report on the national airline’s restructuring plan.

Dr Zammit Lewis said the European Commission was regularly updated but it considered such communications to be sensitive.

The plan was being followed “more closely than ever”, with decisions being taken such as the selling off of subsidiary companies, changes to in-flight catering, the revision of certain contracts and internal changes in the company’s structure.

Past procrastination on important decisions had driven Air Malta into such a bad situation that the previous administration had had to undertake the restructuring process, the minister said.
