Opposition leader Simon Busuttil yesterday rejected the Prime Minister’s claim that the EU had agreed on a concrete commitment of direct action in Libya.
During an EU summit in Brussels on Friday, Joseph Muscat said Malta was satisfied with this “positive development” in the form of a “concrete commitment”, the first of its kind, to intervene with direct action in Libya.
He said EU leaders had also given the United Nations the go ahead to implement measures to increase security in the troubled country
However, in a tweet, Dr Busuttil said Dr Muscat’s claim was “not true at all”. He posted the formal conclusions of the summit, which stated the following about Libya:
“As soon as agreement to form a Government of National Unity is found, the EU stands ready, with countries in the region and international partners, to contribute to its implementation by making full use of all its instruments. The High Representative will present proposals as agreed at the Council on 16 March 2015.
“The EU will step up its engagement on counter-terrorism in the region, with relevant partners.”
