Clutching at rosary beads and whispering prayers, thousands of faithful trailed behind the statue of Our Lady of Sorrows in processions that effectively mark the opening of Holy Week. In line with tradition, some walked barefoot as a sign of sacrifice. Archbishop Paul Cremona led the procession that started at Ta’ Ġieżu church, in Valletta.
