A woman stabbed her partner in the genitals after he hit her in the face in an argument over whether she was cheating on him, a court heard.

Carmen Meilak, 44, from Marsa, was yesterday charged with trying to kill Alfred Farrugia and causing him serious injuries.

The two were having an argument outside their home in Racecourse Street in Marsa on Saturday evening and he was convinced she was cheating on him, sources said. As the exchange got more heated, he allegedly hit her.

She ran into the house and emerged moments later with a knife, allegedly stabbing him in the genitals and left arm, the sources said. He grabbed a piece of wood and hit her again.

Mr Farrugia’s injuries are serious but not critical. Magistrate Miriam Hayman granted Ms Meilak bail against a personal guarantee of €10,000 and ordered that she does not go near Marsa or her partner.
