The man jailed for life for murdering Gozitan lawyer Michael Grech has filed an appeal claiming that procedural errors led him to receive the maximum possible term behind bars.

Mr Grech was shot and battered with a baseball bat outside his Marsalforn home at about 10pm on May 24, 2004.

The errors, defendant David Zerafa submitted, included mistakes such as the judge finding him guilty of relapsing when the jurors should have decided on this charge separately, as procedural law dictates.

Mr Zerafa’s lawyer Malcolm Mifsud said there was not enough evidence for the jurors to reasonably find Mr Zerafa guilty of murder and that errors in Mr Justice Lawrence Quintano’s address to the jury contributed to the verdict.

The case continues.
