The GWU yesterday appealed to the Government to take new measures against the exploitation of migrant workers particularly in the construction sector.
Reacting to a report published in yesterday’s Times of Malta, quoting a Council of Europe report that some migrant workers were paid 25c for a day of hard labour instead of the promised €25, the union said this confirmed its long-held stand against abuse and precarious work.
The GWU said despite various measures taken lately to prevent such abuse, it was evident more action was needed to stamp it out. More unannounced inspections, particularly at construction sites, were needed together with tougher sanctions.
