The GRTU has cautioned the government not to raise the duty on oil purchases in the next Budget, saying the price of fuel was already a huge burden on business.

Earlier this year, the government announced that the price would be set until the end of the year with the aim of increasing stability.

“Unfortunately it seems that any decision taken by the government, whether under this administration or the previous, results in a situation where businesses end up paying more rather than less,” the GRTU said.

While it appreciated the difficult of predicting the fluctuation in international oil prices, it said businesses were paying around 30c more per litre of oil and it would therefore be “absolutely unacceptable” for this burden to grow.
