Forty state schools are getting a facelift in time for the start of the next scholastic year, thanks to an €8 million maintenance programme by the Education Ministry.

Apart from the necessary repair works, structural alterations to cater for the introduction of middle schools and co-educational teaching are being carried out.

Works also include the installation of CCTV cameras, new classroom furniture and the upgrading of sanitary facilities.

This year, a total of €20 million is being committed by the government for construction works in schools.

Education Minister Evarist Bartolo yesterday visited works on a €1.6 million project at the National Sports School in Pembroke and the St Margaret’s College in Cospicua, where a new block is being constructed.

This €2.1 million project is set to be completed next year, and will increase the school capacity up to 500 students.
