Oscar-winning director Danny Boyle says he believes 3D movies have no future – and predicts they will just be a “phase” for the cinema industry.

The director of Slumdog Millionaire, The Beach, Trainspotting and new thriller Trance said he has been impressed by some films, but does not think it will survive.

Boyle said he also feels uncomfortable wearing 3D glasses.

His view is in contrast to fellow acclaimed film-makers such as James Cameron and Peter Jackson, who have heavily invested in the development of 3D technology.

Boyle said: “I don’t use 3D. I’m a spectacle wearer, so I hate going to 3D movies because you have to wear two pairs of spectacles, which makes you feel like even more of a prat.

“You know how everybody feels a bit of prat wearing the 3D spectacles – you as a spectacle wearer feel a double prat.

“There is some extraordinary work done on it. Some of the Pi stuff (Ang Lee’s Life of Pi) was incredible.

“It’s a tool, you know. And it will be very interesting to see... there are sound innovations coming actually, particularly Dolby Atmos, which are going to do something very equivalent to what 3D does.

“So, I don’t know if 3D will survive to be honest, personally. I think it may be a phase.”
