The Nwar basic literacy skills tuition programme in which over 25 children in primary and secondary schools and their carers take taking part this year, will benefit a €25,000 sponsorship from the HSBC Malta Foundation.

The programme, which is run by the Education ministry’s Foundation for Educational Services, is a family literacy programme for students in classes from Year 3 to Form 2 and their carers. The support provided is intensive with a maximum ratio of three children to one tutor.

Through the programme, referred students who, for years, have failed to learn how to read and write, have gained literacy skills in a relatively short time span.

The rapid learning achievement is attributed to the involvement of the carers who support the childrens’ learning and growth within the home and to the effective methodologies and approach used by the Nwar tutors.
