Building a fibre-to-the-home network will require an estimated investment of about €1,260 per household, amounting to between €164 million and €216 million, according to Communications Minister Austin Gatt.

Speaking during a clarification meeting for service providers, Dr Gatt said the government was aware of the “significant challenges” linked with the roll-out of a network.

“The government is prepared to share some of the risks and incentivise investment through direct intervention,” he said yesterday.

The technology provides for faster connection speeds and carrying capacity and the government recently issued a call for expressions of interest, in line with its 2015 Vision to make Malta a centre of excellence.
