SMS News Alert

Times of Malta SMS service

What does the service deliver?

Our newsroom receives a large amount of information every day. While most of it is newsworthy and significant, some items are of such importance that we would like to tell our readers immediately. An example would be finding out about the recent increase in the cost of fuel on the evening before prices went up. This service would mean that whether you are at the beach or in the supermarket, you will be one of the first people to know.

How much does it cost?

The service is free to everyone using a local mobile network.

How can the service be free?

The service will be free because we will invite advertisers to support the cost of sending the SMS to you. Therefore, when you receive an SMS it will carry a headline and be followed by an advertisement.

We would also encourage you to support our advertisers so that we can continue to offer the service.

How frequently will I receive an SMS?

It is impossible to predict how frequently a major breaking news issue occurs. On some days, you might not receive an SMS from us, and on others you might receive more than one.

We will make every effort to make sure that what you receive is relevant and on time. Using this service, we want you to be the first to know that something major has happened – wherever you are.

Our editorial team will make the decision at the time.

When will I receive an SMS?

You will receive an SMS as soon as we receive and verify the information that we send. We will try to do this as quickly as possible. We will be reasonable about the time that we send the news alerts though. If a major event occurs we may send you an alert from 7am up until 10pm.

Who will see my mobile number?

The service is being operated by Allied Newspapers in conjunction with Vodafone who are providing the technical infrastructure to send the SMS. We will not share your information with any other person or company. We will not give your telephone number directly to advertisers. You do not have to be a Vodafone subscriber to receive the alerts.

How do I subscribe to the service?

Subscribing to the service is simple. Send an SMS with the word 'subscribe' to 9918 0018 and your number will be added to the service.

How do I unsubscribe from the service?

You can unsubscribe by sending an SMS with the word ‘unsubscribe’ to 99180018.

How can I advertise my business with the service?
