Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton has chosen U.S. Senator Tim Kaine of Virginia as her running mate.

Kaine, a former governor of the state, was widely seen as the "safe choice" to help propel Clinton to the White House.

As a former missionary in Honduras who speaks fluent Spanish, Kaine could provide the vital link to Latino voters.

At a recent rally in Virginia where he appeared with Clinton, the vice presidential pick directly addressed Hispanic voters in the crowd.

Kaine also hails from the important battleground state of Virginia, which could play a decisive role in Clinton's race against Republican nominee Donald Trump.

The former mayor of Richmond and civil rights lawyer beat out a small group of VP contenders that included Senator Cory Booker of New Jersey, and Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack.
