A 32-year-old man who first went on a drunken drive and then damaged a sink and mattress while being detained was handed a suspended sentence today.

Nazzareno Abela, 32 from Senglea, admitted to threatening two police officers, driving recklessly and under the influence of alcohol, breaching public peace and disobeying police orders. He also admitted to damaging property at the police's Floriana lock-up when he slammed his head against the sink in a drunken frenzy.

Prosecuting officer Nikolai Sant told Magistrate Doreen Clarke that the accused had apologised to the police and was ready to pay for the expenses incurred by his actions, which amounted to €465.

The court sentenced him to one year imprisonment suspended for two years, fined him €800 and ordered him to pay the €465 owed to the Police Commissioner within three months.

His driving licence was also suspended for six months.

Lawyer Carmelo Mifsud Bonnici was defense counsel.
