It was the song that defined a generation and the few lucky ones who happened to be at a Valletta pub early this morning ended up singer an impromptu version with the original performer himself.

At 3am, patrons at The Pub in Valletta belted the Oasis classic Wonderwall with former lead singer Liam Gallagher, who happens to be on holiday in Malta.

A group of friends were celebrating a birthday in Valletta when word spread that the rock star was at The Pub nearby.

"We headed there, around 20 of us, got drinks and started speaking to him. We were with Peter Borg, from Red Electrick, so we soon got a guitar and started singing together," Albert Camilleri told the website Lovin Malta.

Before they knew it, they were all singing the classic 1995 song Wonderwall.

"He even wanted Peter to play some of his own songs, which he really liked. I'm not the biggest fan but my friends were in a dream. Every five seconds they were like: Is this really happening? Am I really singing Wonderwall with Liam Gallagher?"

Together with his brother Noel, Liam Gallagher gained fame as the lead singer of rock band Oasis, before their notorious rivalry split the band. Gallagher continued with the former members of Oasis under the name Beady Eye until they disbanded in 2014. The Pub in Valletta is incidentally the same bar where actor Oliver Reed died after a drinking spree.
