The European Commission has approved Malta’s Internal Security Fund (ISF) for the 2014-2020 financial period, the Parliamentary Secretariat for the EU Presidency 2017 and EU Funds said.

The fund, which will allow Malta to invest around €75 million (EU funds only), will enable the Armed Forces to procure a helicopter capable patrol vessel and the third twin-engine helicopter.

It will also provide for the installation of Phase II of the Integrated Communications System, the construction of a new Joint Operations Centre, the improvement of the reaction capability of OPV P61 and the third fixed-wing maritime patrol aircraft, as well as two new hangars and ancillary facilities at Air Wing.

Other interventions include the enhancement of the operational capabilities of the Explosive Ordnance Disposal platoon, the enhancement of the capacities of the Police Cyber Crime Unit, bolstering of the Hazmat Section within the Civil Protection Department and improving the security of ammo and explosives ammunition storage facilities.
