It's in the jeans

Get the blues with denim's latest looks

Trends may come and go but if there's a staple that always survives season after season, it's trusty old jeans. Long the wardrobe stalwart of the style savvy, denim jeans have been around for decades. You don't have to be a label-lover with a fat wallet to work the latest trends. This spring/summer, the high street has hoards of jeans in a myriad of cuts and colours.

Move over skinny jeans, there's more than one shape making a statement this season. We look at the key shapes all denim divas need in their wardrobe this season.

BOUNCE-BACK BOOTCUTS
The newest shape on the block this season, bootcuts are well and truly re-born and made their comeback with a very stylish ambassador. When trend-setter Kate Moss stepped out in a flattering pair of Diesel Louvelys, the high street quickly followed suit.

But forget the bum-skimming variety. Overall rises are inching upwards but stopping way short of the belly button. Customers are bored of jeans showing everything when you sit down.

FLOATY FLARES
If one pair of jeans had to scoop the award for "Jean of the Season", then step forward the flare. To be bang on trend, take your waistline higher.

The high-waisted flare is of the moment. Seventies' style, here we come! Wide-leg flares are a key way to tap into this season's sexy Boho vibe. Just add stack 1970s heels and Farah Fawcett flicks and you're ready to go. Avoid flat shoes at all costs (to your feet), as flares will leave your legs looking short and stumpy.

SKINNY MINNIES
Our ankles may have been given some serious volume with bootcuts and flares back in vogue, but there is a figure-hugging alternative. Skinny jeans are going nowhere fast but come in a new cropped guise this season.

Look for styles cropped just above the ankle - perfect for showing off your favourite pair of heels. Balance the skin-tight look with volume on your top half.

DIRE STRAIGHTS
Classic fans, fear not. Old faithful straights are still hot for this season. Go smart in dark-wash denim or embrace a summery California vibe with super-light faded denim.

The key to picking the right pair is all in the back pocket detail. If they're too small, an ample behind will end up looking even bigger. Versatile straight legs can be worn just about anytime and anywhere - just dress up or down with flats or futuristic heels.

BOUNTIFUL BRIGHTS
If you're looking for the hottest denim shades this summer, stick to very pale and clean colours. But those who want to break free from denim wash norms should head for bold colour. Yellow is big, but red, aqua and green are also the colours to buy.

Coloured jeans aren't a figure fixer, however, so steer clear if you have bum or thigh hang-ups. From in-your-face fuchsia to canary yellow, keep your top half simple and let your bold jeans do all the talking and walking.
