Leos Svarovsky to conduct the Malta Philharmonic Orchestra

Following last week's successful concert to mark Malta's changeover to the euro currency, the Malta Philharmonic Orchestra returns to one of the most imposing buildings in Valletta, the Mediterranean Conference Centre, to present another in the series of concerts this time under the renowned conductor Leos Svárovsky, on Saturday at 7.30 p.m.

Mr Svarovsky (1961) studied flute at the Prague Conservatory and conducting at the Prague Academy of Music with Václav Neumann. He began his career in the Prague National Theatre as an assistant to Zdenek Kosler. In 1991 he was invited by the Herbert von Karajan Foundation to work with Sir George Solti, Claudio Abbado and the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra at the festival Sommerspiele Salzburg. Since 1999 Mr Svárovsky has been teaching conducting at the Academy of Music in Prague. After his Malta concert he joins the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra on its tour in the US.

Another major attraction of this concert is the return of the young virtuoso pianist Lukas Vondracek who will play Liszt Piano Concerto No.1 which he recently played with the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra with a resounding success in Prague. Mr Vondracek returns to Malta following an extensive tour in Australia where he gave a number of concerts conducted by his mentor Vladimir Ashkenazy. The programme also includes Christopher Muscat's Elegy, Franz Liszt's Les Preludes - Symphonic Poem No.3 and Tchaikovsky's monumental work Symphony No. 5 in E minor, Op.64.

Tickets may be booked by e-mail: bookings@ mcc.com.mt or by phone on 2559 5751.

A limited number of tickets at a discounted price will be made available to students and senior citizens on a first-come-first-served basis.
