Why does Germany, (almost) always win?

Gary Lineker once said that “Soccer is a game for 22 people that run around, play the ball, and one referee who makes a slew of mistakes, and in the end Germany always wins”. By the time you might be reading it, this quotation might have transformed itself into a cliché.

However it seems he’s right. Germany, which with Italy, had the slowest start among the last eight of the Euro championship, are in the semi finals. They eliminated Ronaldo’s Portugal. Prior to the tournament many placed Portugal among the favourites of winning the trophy. Those who love the game also felt that this is Ronaldo’s year and as such, the Euro 2008 will be the right stage for him to make sure of emulating AC Milan’s KAKA success last year.

Ronaldo is not to blame for the Portuguese exit from the tournament. Germany reached the semi-final on merit. You might call them cynical. Some might find them boring. However one thing is for sure. They are consistent and that’s why Lineker’s quotation is topical every time there is an international football tournament.

Germany might not have the team of yesteryear, but they have a total support from their nationals. Since the world cüp 2006, Germany rediscovered itself as a nation, in terms of football. Big support and celebrations run through Berlin and other citys in Germany.

I suspect that when the Turkish players prepare for their matches, they are made to listen Vanessa William's song "Save the best for last ". They over-turned the result against the Czechs in 15 minutes. They did it again in their Quarter Final against the Croatia tonight. 60 seconds from the end, Croatia were in the semis. 60 seconds later, the Turks levelled the score. 10 minutes later, Croatia were eliminated.

So the first two Quarter finals saw two favourites out. Interesting to note that both Portugal and Croatia came first in their group. Now, they're first (of the last 8) to go home. If the pattern holds for the other two quarter finals, then the next semi-final should be, Russia vs .... let's wait till Sunday.
