A policeman, 27, is expected to be charged on Monday with raping a female colleague in a police car.

The police said on Sunday he would also be charged with violent indecent assault and sexual harassment.

The officer, who has been in the force for about three years, allegedly committed the rape months ago, sources said, adding that the same policewoman, 19, was the victim of both the alleged rape and the violent indecent assault. The latter case is believed to have occurred in a police car in the past couple of days.

The male officer was stationed in Msida, and the alleged sexual assault victim was based in another station, sources said.

They said the alleged victim came forward with her story after discovering that a female officer in the same district was going through a similar trauma at the hands of the same policeman.

The young woman asked to speak to her superiors and told them what was happening.

An investigation was immediately launched and the vice squad, led by police inspectors Joseph Busuttil and Mark Mercieca, took the man in for questioning.

The sources said this would be the first time a police officer was accused of raping a colleague.
