The rugby national team will be chasing top spot in the European Nations Cup – Conference 1 South qualifying group when facing leaders Israel at the Hibs Stadium this afternoon.

Malta are currently second on 10 points, four adrift of Israel, who, however have played a game more.

With only the top-placed side progressing to the promotion play-offs, the locals have no other option but to win this match and stay in contention ahead of next week’s final match in Croatia.

Damian Neill’s men hold a psychological edge over Israeli as they emerged victorious from both their previous meetings in the competition.

Malta and Israel first met in the 2014-16 European Nations Cup. In the away match, the Maltese held the edge 16-13 before cruising to an assuring 30-9 win at the Hibs Stadium.

Neill is not underestimating the opposition.

“I’m not giving too much importance to previous matches between the two nations,” Neill said.

“We know their style of play and they’re well acquainted with ours. Israel are top of the group not by a mere coincidence. They are a very solid team and make it very difficult for opponents to impose their game.

“Israel are one of the new realities in European rugby and boast an impressive 20-match winning streak so we surely have to be at our best.

“But we have improved a lot over the last 12 months and I can say that we are playing some of the best rugby since I came over 13 years ago. We are ready to produce another strong match.”

Malta is boosted by the return of Harry Collins who has recovered from a long-term injury but Rhodri Apsee misses out with a knee injury.
