I refer to my letter (April 13) regarding the dangerous substance ethoxyquin in fish feed and my questions to the health laboratory whether tests are being made on the fish meal and other fresh fish and shellfish imports.

To date no reply has been forthcoming. Can the Malta Competition and Consumer Affairs Authority intervene on behalf of the consumer and make them reply?

From the article regarding the rampant illegal use of pesticides (April 11) one concludes that the laboratory is manned by staff who are prone to mistakes, take a long time to produce results and are ill-equipped to deliver a reply.

With the general election looming, can the Minister of Health beef up the laboratory by way of equipment and more qualified personnel? The health of Maltese families and, especially, of the children, is of primary importance.

Incidentally, the Minister of Health is reported saying that the MRSA cases at Mater Dei Hospital were down by 90 per cent (April 12).

He is quoted saying that cases dropped from two per 1,000 bed nights, that is 0.002 per cent, to a mere 0.2 per cent. Are the figures right?
